Creating and selecting categories

Creating categories from the Transactions tab

The category tree does not change very often but if you are at the Transactions tab and realize that you need a new category then you can do it without going to the Accounts tab. Let say that you went to the movie. This spending can be put into "Expense.Living.Entertainment.Else". After the third such spending you feel that you need a Movie category.

Select the "Expense.Living.Entertainment" category.

Type ".Movie" to end. After leaving the cell the category will be created. If you misspelled the name then go Category tree to correct it. Do not forget to change the category of the first two transactions when you went to the movie.

Be cautious when creating a new category. Do you have a similar category already? Did you choose the parent of the new category correctly?  The more category you have, the more difficult is to categorize the transactions.

Potential bug

It may happen that you have done everything correctly but the new category is not created. If you refresh the page then the category disappears. This may happen at the Capital gain tax, Interest or dividend, Tax for interest or dividend and Fee columns. The workaround is to select an existing category, refresh the page and then create the new category.

A tooltip can be seen about this if you move the mouse cursor to the heading of the mentioned columns.

Selecting categories

You can select a category using the drop down menu but it is easier to type the name of the category.

When you start to type E the category Expense is offered. Press the right arrow to accept this.

Press dot and the first child of Expense, the Financial product category will be offered. It is not what you need so go on with typing and press L.

Now Living is offered. Press the right arrow to accept this, type the dot and go on. This method is effective if more or less you remember the names of you categories. I saved the name of my most used categories in a txt file, so it is easy to remember them.

You can change the "Account separator" in the Parameters tab. It can be a single character only. In the category name I use singular because it looks silly if everything ends with s.
